Christantus Uche Fuels Straightforward Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved no match against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Asserted from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
