Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures First Title in Over Two Years

19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been won on hard courts

A comeback the Russian player claimed his maiden championship for 882 days with success over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.

Medvedev, a ex- world number one, has endured a difficult period, winning just one match at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

The player's varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his serve in especial - resulted in him falling of the top ten and eventually parting ways with former trainer Gilles Cervara.

Presently working with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents the player's first trophy since the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt from spring of that year.

Victory also signifies Medvedev has achieved twenty-one championships at 21 distinct events.

"This marks the first occasion I have attended a competition with my children simultaneously, so to secure a trophy is really nice," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter my daughter, because the first title I won when my child Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had lost his last six finals, including in that event previously this season.

The player's defensive play style and frequent emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to question if his ability to compete at the top level was finished.

Yet the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, attempting to advance forward and perform assertively, supported by an improved serve.

The champion came back from a break down in the initial set against the challenging Moutet, taking 4 of the concluding five exchanges to go ahead.

Both players swapped breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial ATP Tour title, seized the initiative to push for a final set.

Moutet defended 4 early chances in a close final set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to serve for the match.

Fittingly, he earned the title with a shot at the net, with his opponent unable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
